SURREALISM IS DEAD, LONG LIVE DEATH! is devoted to the activities of the Surrealist Group in England in the years following the death of André Breton.
This publication brings together, for the first time, a selection of documents and archival materials from the John Lyle collection (1932–2002), a central figure in the brief yet intense Surrealist revival in Great Britain between 1966 and 1972. It offers a critical, annotated exploration of this previously unpublished corpus, comprising correspondence, manifestos, manuscripts, fragments of avant-garde journals, exhibition programmes, and other traces of this fragile and often chaotic period.
SURREALISM IS DEAD, LONG LIVE DEATH! traces the final aftershocks of artistic and literary modernism — a movement that had already become largely anachronistic several decades earlier and which still lacks a fully coherent narrative within art history.
